On Furlough or Following

by

Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matt. 4:19

Everyone of us has one or several people in our lives that we respect and will do whatever they tell us to do. Such people may be our parents, spouses, children, best friends, spiritual leaders, bosses at work, etc. A relationship must already exist between you and the person for him to have the audacity to instruct you about something and you do it.

There is no one like Jesus that everyone of us should respect and respond to; more than that, we must reverence, worship and obey every instruction He gives us. He has earned our respect in many ways.

Here are two of such:

  1. He created us and therefore owns us.
  2. He loves us and even died in our place to secure the forgiveness of our sins.

Therefore, Jesus’ invitation above to come and walk with (follow) Him cannot be ignored or even delayed. When we follow Jesus, He equips and enables us to bring lost people into the Kingdom. God’s power works with our willingness to follow Him to bring about such fruit. John 15:5 He says: “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Jesus Christ indeed is my Lord and it is a contradiction for me to say “No, Lord” or “Wait, Lord” to His urgent invitation.

If we are not fishing or bearing fruit, then the question is: are we following?
