Keeping The Main Thing, The Main Thing

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4.

Keeping The Main Thing, The Main Thing

One of the biggest challenges we face as humans is keeping the main thing the main thing. We get easily distracted and especially today with everyone multitasking. David needed to remain focused on God, but he was also a king, husband, father, etc. and these good roles were part of the distraction and so he cried out the prayer:

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. Psalm 27:4

Seeking God and living only for Him must remain our priority. Jesus anchored this truth when He challenged Martha who was distracted by her good deeds of hospitality:

Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things, but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:41,42 Goodnews Bible).

Why is it reasonable that we live out this clear teaching? God created all things and owns all of them including us. He says: But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matt. 6:33. If we believe in God and His promises, all of us will live by this standard, but that is not the case. People who meet us for the first time see other things in us before they eventually discover that we are Christians. Somethings in us show up more than God.

Lord, may we die to self so that only Christ might be seen in us. Amen!
