Religious violence in Nigeria for February 2022

Nigeria is estimated to have over 250 ethnic groups and around 500 diverse ethnolinguistic groups. According to 2018 estimates, the main ethnic groups were:

  • Hausa 30 %
  • Yoruba 15.5 %
  • Igbo (Ibo) 15.2 %
  • Fulani 6 %
  • Tiv 2.4 %
  • Kanuri/Beriberi 2.4 %
  • Ibibio 1.8 %
  • Ijaw/Izon 1.8 %, and
  • Those classified as ‘other’ 24.7 %.

Islam is the main religion constituting 53.5 % of Nigerians and is the dominant religion in the north, with Christianity dominant in the south – Roman Catholicism is practiced by 10.6 % and other Christian beliefs by 35.3 %. 2018 estimates indicate that the remaining population (0.6 %) holds traditional religious beliefs.

  •  February 1  – Kidnappers abducted three family members and “several” others (estimated at eight total) in Illela, Sokoto.
  •  February 2  – Nigerian troops killed three kidnappers in Uhunmwonde, Edo.
  •  February 2  – Bandits killed six in Jibia, Katsina.
  •  February 2  – Kidnappers abducted six in Gusau, Zamfara.
  •  February 2  – A Boko Haram road bomb killed a Joint Task Force (JTF) leader in Biu, Borno.
  •  February 3  – Bandits killed eleven in Kaura, Kaduna.
  •  February 3  – “Several” were killed on both sides (estimated at ten each) during a clash between bandits and soldiers at a military base in Shiroro, Niger State.
  •  February 3  – Bandits killed seventeen in Malumfashi, Katsina.
  •  February 3  – Gunmen killed three police officers and abducted “several” (estimated at ten) in Paikoro, Niger State.
  •  February 3  – Airstrikes killed “scores” (estimated at forty) of Boko Haram/ISWA militants in Marte, Borno.
  •  February 4  – Bandits killed twenty in Tsafe LGA, ten in Bungudu LGA, and three in Bakura LGA in Zamfara.

  •  February 6  – Bandits kidnapped a priest and killed one other in Kauru, Kaduna.
  •  February 6  – Police repelled an attack on a police station in Okene, Kogi, killing one of the assailants.
  •  February 7  – Kidnappers abducted one and kidnapped two in Etsako West, Edo.
  •  February 7  – Bandits killed ten and kidnapped one in Bakori LGA and killed three and kidnapped fourteen in Funtua LGA in Katsina.
  •  February 7  – Kidnappers abducted two in Bogoro, Bauchi.
  •  February 7  – Police officers killed three Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) militants in Njaba, Imo.
  •  February 8  – A bandit who escaped from prison killed eight in Ohaji/Egbema, Imo.
  •  February 8  – Bandits kidnapped one and killed one divisional police officer, one soldier, and one other in Jibia, Katsina.
  •  February 8  – Bandits killed seven in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna.
