Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to king Xerxes, preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews. Esther 10:3
Perhaps you are like me. I often wish I had a powerful position and influence to change things for good in the country or Church. Well, that may not be God’s calling for me. The fact is that each one of us has power and influence over one or a few people. How are we doing with that?
Mordecai had no chance of rising to be No. 2 man in Persia. He was not Persian but a Jew and a slave. He might have had an insignificant job stationed at the gate to the king’s palace which was manned by Persian security officers. He was a Jew to the core and best of all he had the fear of God. This informed how he faithfully discharged his duties at the gate.
Secondly, he put the needs of others above his. Being faithful to God and his responsibilities almost cost him his life and God came to his rescue and then promoted him to become second in command in Persia. He was faithful in small things and God entrusted him with greater things.
Instead of daydreaming for power to change the world, we should focus on living our life in the fear of the Lord and caring for people around us. God will enlarge our circle of influence as we remain faithful. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus Christ and His exemplary leadership.
