Even Rahab, The Prostitute, A Hero of Faith?

By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient (Heb. 11:31). Rahab’s story, recorded in Joshua chapter 2, gives us an insight into what everyone in Jericho knew. She knew, just as everyone else in Jericho, about the God of the Israelites who dried up the Red Sea and destroyed Sihon and Og, the two powerful kings of the Ammonites. Everyone was afraid of the Israelites and their mighty God. Rather than Jericho opening their gates and peacefully surrendering to the Israelites, they chose to oppose God by preparing to fight. Rahab, though a street girl, chose to trust in the mighty God of the Israelites and took the risk at the cost of her life to accommodate the spies. James acknowledges that faith is not passive but active. You can believe what you want, but that does not translate to faith. When you step out to act on your belief, that is faith. Rahab’s action was credited to her as faith. The rest of the people in Jericho were faithless and lost. Ensure you do everything God reveals to you. That is faith in action.
